DISMISSAL PICK-UP PROCEDURE
Due to the major congestion in our front hallway at dismissal time, and in order to make picking up your child at the end of the day at Lakes more organized and much safer, Lakes instituted a new pick-up procedure at the end of the day starting last April. This change ensured a safer dismissal for ALL students and please understand that these procedures will only be in effect when you are picking up your child at the end of the school day. The procedure is as follows:
· Students who will be picked up at dismissal time will be released from all classrooms at 3:40 every day except Fridays when they will be released at 2:40, and will report to the Cafeteria.
· Mrs. Nemecek and another staff member will be in the cafeteria to monitor the students (who will be seated at the lunch tables) and be ready to greet parents.
· At exactly 3:45 (2:45 on Fridays), the single outside door to the left of the front entrance will be unlocked and parents will enter that door to pick up their child in the cafeteria.
· A table will be set up just inside the cafeteria and parents will stop there to sign out their child. Mrs. Nemecek will monitor this and will call your child over as you sign him/her out.
· Parents and students will then leave by the same door that they entered…this will be our Dismissal door for end of the day pick-ups.
· Latch Key students will report to the gym each day at the usual dismissal time of 3:50 (2:50 on Fridays) where the latch key staff will be ready to greet them and take attendance. They will then return to their regular location of the cafeteria at approximately 3:55 (2:55 on Fridays) when all of our car riders have been picked up from the cafeteria.
· There will be a barrier set up restricting entrance into the main hall from the cafeteria until all students have left the building (bus riders and latch key students will leave their classrooms at the usual time of 3:50).
· If pick-up parents have a meeting with a teacher or other staff member after school, we will ask that you wait on the benches until all we are done releasing students from the cafeteria and then we will remove the barrier.
· Siblings that walk over from Farms at the end of the day may still come in the back door and walk directly to the cafeteria, where they will be let through the barrier by a staff member. Please encourage your Farms student to walk quickly to Lakes so as not to hold up the check-out process.
***Crucial to this pick-up process is that you are communicating to the office any changes in your regular routine (ie: you usually pick up but want your child to go to latch key or ride the bus home today; or vice versa – your child usually goes to latch key or rides the bus and you will be picking them up at dismissal; or someone else will be picking them up, etc.). We will send passes down to teachers with the names of students who will be picked up each day, which is why it is so important that you contact the office with changes in routine. PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL THESE CHANGES IN PICK-UP ROUTINE TO EITHER TEACHERS OR OFFICE STAFF ESPECIALLY LATER IN THE DAY...we ask this because substitute teachers have no access to teacher email and both teachers and office staff are very busy throughout the day and may miss an email with changes. It is best if you make calls to the office with this information as early as possible, and we will make sure that the teachers know of these changes through the passes that will come down to your child. Please remember that if your child is usually a bus rider and you do not send in a note or call the office if you are picking him/her up, they WILL be put on the bus that day. We cannot rely on a young child saying “my mom said she will pick me up today” without verification from you…again, a safety issue.
Our expectation is that parents will all adhere to our time frame by being prepared to be at the new Pick-Up Door at 3:45 so that we can move you all through as quickly and safely as possible. We not only believe that it will alleviate the congestion in the front hallway, but that it may also alleviate some congestion in the parking lot. However, the bottom line is that we are doing this to better ensure the safety of our students and it will allow us a system of checks and double checks so that we know where our students are at dismissal, that we have them in the right spots and with the right people.
Thanks so much, in advance, for your patience and cooperation. We will work together to make this a successful effort to keep our students safe!

Lakes Elementary
A MESSAGE FROM YOUR NEW PRINCIPAL - WELCOME BACK!
I am so pleased to welcome you all to Lakes Elementary for the 2015-2016 school year! I am sure that your summer was filled with exciting adventures, lots of reading, plenty of rest and relaxation, lots of writing, fun with family and friends, lots of math, and now I hope you are ready to begin another amazing school year. We wish the very best to our Lakes students who are moving on to 5th grade at Farms this year. We will miss you!
I would also like to send well wishes to staff members that will not be returning to Lakes this year. Congratulations to 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Juliar, on her retirement…she will be greatly missed by staff, students, and parents and we truly appreciate all her important contributions to our school community over many years at Lakes. Congratulations also to Mrs. Furr, who will be in her new position at Central Office as ELA Literacy Coach. Although she will not be “housed” at Lakes any more, we will certainly see her in our building frequently as she continues to assist teachers with providing best practice instruction throughout the district. She truly has a gift in this area and will be a tremendous asset to Hartland Schools in her new position. We will also miss the many contributions of Mrs. Peterson who will be teaching full time at Farms this year.
I am pleased to announce two new additions to our Lakes staff this year. We are happy to welcome Mrs. Monique Alberts back to the 4th grade classroom. We are so happy to have her rejoin our Lakes family. We are also happy to welcome Mr. Scott Storey back to our staff for the mornings at Lakes, he will be a welcome addition. Mrs. Barb has moved up to teach first grade this year and she will be an excellent addition to our team at that level. Lastly, we are happy to announce that 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Katie Culbert, has been hired full time to continue to positively impact students like she has the past two years as a long-term substitute teacher.
I would like to let parents and students know about our starting and ending times for this year. Our beginning time will be 8:50 (the music to enter the building will start at 8:45) and dismissal will be at 3:50 (the same times as last year). Please be aware of the new dismissal policy we implemented last spring for students who are picked up at the end of the day. We will once again be having “early release Fridays” every week in order to provide more consistent and effective professional development for our teachers, which will directly and positively impact teacher instruction and student learning. Elementary dismissal time on Fridays will be 2:50. Bus service will be provided at the Friday time just as it is on other days. Of course, the Lakes Latch-Key will be available at 2:50 on Fridays as well, for those who participate in that program on other days of the week.
Finally, Lakes will be providing a “before-school-starts” Open House for our 1st -4th grade students this year which will be held on Wednesday, September 2 from 5:30-6:30. This will be an opportunity to bring your students into the school before the first day, in order to meet their teacher and locate their classroom. There will be no formal presentation for 1st through 4th grades, but teachers will have curriculum and procedural information available at the Open House for parents. Please note that our Kindergarten Orientation will also be on September 2, but it will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 and will include a short presentation for parents in the gym. We appreciate 1st-4th grade families waiting until 5:30 to come into the building, to allow our kindergarten students the opportunity to see their new school and visit with their teachers, without too much congestion in the building.
You will receive a letter from me sometime in late August, concerning teacher assignments for the new school year, as well as other important information to know before the first day. I want to thank Mrs. Smither for her exceptional leadership and the timely mentoring she has provided me and countless others during her time at Lakes. I know I have very big shoes to fill in taking over for Mrs. Smither and know what an amazing place Lakes has become under her watch. Fortunately, she has left behind an outstanding staff, amazing students, and incredibly supportive parents and community. I look forward to working hard to maintain the tradition of excellence that Mrs. Smither and many others have helped create for Lakes. Enjoy the rest of your vacation and I will see you soon!
